Fan favorite, Suzanne
Westenhoefer (Laughing
Matters, Live
from the Village, Where the
Girls Are, A Family Affair),
is back with another live show, this time
from the heartland, Indianapolis.
--------
If you're fan of Westenhoefer, you'll
love this DVD. It's typical Westenhoefer,
pointing out everyday things that are
just awkward and funny - like strap-ons
and parents.
Filmed in front of a live audience, (specifically
not in New York or Los Angeles), Westenhoefer
takes the stage with energy, and in her
un-scripted style, chats about life. Among
her topics are her girl friend, gay cruises,
and how freaky it is to have a houseguest
make off with one of your favorite sex
accouterments. Oh, and her surprise wedding.
It takes a bit for the audience to get
warmed up, but once the groove gets going,
Westenhoefer delivers some fresh laughs
- and some food for thought. (Maybe lesbians
can learn a thing or two about how to
have fun on a cruise from our gay brothers).
Just be aware that sometimes Westenhoefer
isn't setting us up for a joke, but pointing
out some weirdness that is innately and
awkwardly funny.
Special Features:
In the special features, viewers get a
raw, behind the scenes look at Westenhoefer.
The first segment features Westenhoefer
being interviewed in the showroom before
the performance.
This is a very casual interview and,
at one point, the interview even breaks
down into a private conversation. (Hello,
guys? We're still here). Westenhoefer's
camera-shy (dare I say dyke-alike) girlfriend,
Jennifer Houston, makes an appearance
near the end of the interview and nobly
talks about how it is to have her very
personal life broadcast (and laughed at)
on stage. (It must have worked out because
the two were "officially" married
in California in 2008).
The second special feature is a handi-cam
video of the couple as they leave at the
crack-of-dawn to fly to the gig. Not much
here unless you want to experience that
groggy grumpiness that goes along with
travel before the sun's up. It may, however,
make you appreciate that a comedian's
life isn't all about glamour.
You may have seen a 45-minute version
of A Bottom on Top on LOGO. If you're
in the mood for some light-hearted fun,
watch the full show on DVD. There is some
time-sensitive material, but overall it's
still going to be funny. You can learn
about "the greatest invention ever,"
and watch the retrospective of lesbian
hair as the camera cuts to the audience.
