Butterfly made its
mark in Hong Kong as an art house film that made money as well as garnering award
nominations. At almost two hours, it is very slow moving, with experimental use
of the camera.
Flavia (Josie Ho) is a teacher with a husband and young
daughter. She finds herself falling in love with the younger Yip (Tian Yuan),
and the two share many an erotic scene. Flavia's husband (Eric Kot) tries to win
her back, and as Flavia struggles with guilt, he is actually a very sympathetic
character.
We also see home movie-style flashbacks to Flavia's first love,
Jin (Stephanie Che), a teenage revolutionary in China (seen on the dvd cover).
For me, the timeline was sometimes hard to follow between past, present and a
subplot of another set of teenage girls who ditch school. For those who
like slow, smoldering romances, this might be the one for you, but not my cup
of tea.
