This anthology covers three
short stories and features a well known cast. In "Mr. Roberts," a teacher
(Steven Weber) and student (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) in the 1970s struggle with
being gay. In "Amos and Andy," a present day father (Ed Asner) deals
with his son's marriage to another man. In the first segment, "A Friend
of Dorothy," it's 1954, and Dorothy (Brittany Murphy) returns to her small
hometown to live with her mother (Margot Kidder) after being given a dishonorable
discharge from the Navy for "sexual deviancy." Her mother kicks her
out of the house, and most of the town residents visibly shun her. Café
owner Janet (Helen Shaver, Desert Hearts,
The Craft, "The L Word") is the only
one in town who befriends her, and the rest of the film is in flashback as Dorothy
relates her story. Janet gives her some cash and hooks her up with a friend in
Greenwich Village, telling Dorothy that when she was young, she also had an older
woman who helped her out of a bad situation. As repayment, Janet asks that Dorothy
later return the favor to another woman in need - a great message to remind us
to take care of our own. Directed by Donna Deitch (Desert
Hearts, The Women of Brewster Place, Fabulous!).
