Dr. Finn Jefferies (Brooke
Johnson) and her 11 year old daughter (Maya Ritter) are both recovering from the
death of Nancy (Gail Maurice, Johnny Greyeyes), Finn's partner and Zelly's
biological mother. Finn is lost trying to be everything to Zelly as well as maintaining
her workaholic lifestyle, while her daughter acts out by smoking pot and shoplifting
with her friends. Zelly's father (Richard Clarkin) threatens to take custody,
questioning Finn's parenting skills, and her hot affair with a younger coworker
also seems headed for disaster. Mother and daughter have a lot to work through,
and it is unlikely events that finally bring them closer together. Finn
took over Nancy's practice at a Toronto abortion clinic, and when anti-abortion
extremists attempt to assassinate her as she drives away on her motorcycle, Diana
Peris (Yanna McIntosh) is one of the police officers assigned to protect both
home and office. While Diana is also critical of Finn's parenting style, she forms
a bond with Zelly and spends overtime at the house. Intrigued with one
another, Diana and Finn begin to build a relationship in the face of danger from
snipers. Mixing the issues of single parenting, lesbian life, the politics of
abortion, and the tension of a murder attempts, Finn's Girl is extremely
well-acted and combines these themes easily. This personal drama will impress
you with its treatment of these issues and grab your heart with wonderful characters
you'll be rooting for. |
