Based loosely on the Joyce
Carol Oates novel, Foxfire stars a young Angelina Jolie. Leather-clad
Legs (Jolie, Girl Interrupted, Gia, Lara Croft) walks into
a high school biology class and unites a group of girls who need to stand up for
themselves against a sexually abusive teacher. After the girls get suspended
for beating him up, they meet up with Legs and start some more trouble. There's
Maddy the artist (Hedy Burress, If These Walls Could Talk I); Rita (Jenny
Lewis), who lacks self confidence; Violet (Sarah Rosenberg), who lacks respect
from others; and Goldie (Jenny Shimizu, The New
Women, "Ellen"), with a drug addiction - all very different
young women who form a bond. One night after they break into the school,
Legs whips off her shirt and gives herself a tattoo above her right breast, and
then the rest of the girls follow. Watching her tattoo them all, hand on breast,
is quite a sight. Maddy also finds herself falling in love with Legs, trying to
decide whether or not to travel with her.
The characters tend to be a
little stereotypical, and the plot over the top at points, but it's still worth
a look for a bit of fun. Legs is a great pulp novel kind of character who leads
the other girls to self awareness and excitement. Random fact: Jolie and
Shimizu became a couple after meeting on this film. |
