When it comes to our lesbian
foremothers, Gertrude Stein is on the top of the list. This documentary uses scenes
from her plays and operas and is narrated from her own written words. We see her
three decades as a linchpin in Parisian intellectual life from photographs and
interviews with some who visited the salon of Gertrude and companion Alice B.
Toklas. Also includes musical performances adapted from her work. The documentary
focuses on her written work and her influence on other writers and artists like
Hemingway, Pound, Eliot and Picasso. I recommend the fictional Waiting
for the Moon for those who are more interested in what Gertrude and Alice's
life together may have been like.
