Wing (Anita Yuen) is a huge
fan of award winning singer Rose (Carina Lau) and her song writer/producer Sam
(Leslie Cheung), a celebrity couple in Hong Kong. When Sam announces that he is
looking for a young man to make into the next big pop star, Wing cuts her hair
and poses as a boy to try to meet her idols. In a stroke of luck, Wing wins
the contest and is a special favorite of Sam's gay assistant Auntie (Eric Tsang),
recognizing that "he" will be attractive to both boys and girls. When
Rose comes on to Wing and wants to go to bed with him, he tells her that he is
gay to avoid her advances. Sam is also attracted to Wing and begins to think that
he might be gay as well, finally kissing him. After a lot of angst on Sam's
part, he breaks up with Rose. Predictably, Wing reveals to Sam that she is a woman.
Girl or boy, Sam is in love with her, and it's a happy, romantic end to the film
as they finally get together. This is a sweet romantic comedy with a gender
bending twist, even though girl doesn't end up with girl. Anita Yuen is great
as the naive Wing, and she won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for this
role. The story continues in the sequel, Who's
the Woman, Who's the Man. |
