Carrie and Elisia are lesbian
grandmothers, a couple who decide to cycle across the country to bring attention
to the issue of same sex marriage equality. This documentary follows them from
San Francisco to New York City, through the small towns, big cities, mountain
ranges and rural expanses in between. One rides a bike while the other follows
in the RV with their two mini pinschers, switching off throughout the day. Planned
stops include events, protests and press opportunities, many with small town lesbian
and gay groups. The mayor of Salt Lake City is unexpectedly supportive, while
the stop in Laramie, Wyoming where Matthew Shepard was killed is a tough visit.
There are many highs and lows along the way, along with physical and emotional
challenges. Carrie hails from Mars, Pennsylvania (thus the documentary title),
but when she reaches her hometown, no one in her family comes to meet them. Finally
they reach New York City to wide support and great press coverage, dipping their
wheels into the Atlantic Ocean just three months after they began at the Pacific. By
the way, Carrie and Elisia are the two women behind Rainbow
Law, a groundbreaking website and service offering free and low cost legal
planning resources to gay and lesbian couples.
