On the surface, Love Sick
starts out as a love story between two Bucharest college students. Alex (Ioana
Barbu) and Kiki (Maria Popistasu) play, study and spend most of their time together.
They both seem head over heals for the other (although we rarely see overt affection,
they do wake up in the morning together). But Alex has another love in her
life, one who throws her into emotional turmoil. In an uncomfortable twist, this
story, based on real events in Romania, is about incest. Alex's brother Sandu
(Tudor Chirila) can't stay away from his sister, and his jealousy of Kiki leads
him to reveal their secret to the world. We finally see the struggle between
Alex and Sandu, and the pain it causes Kiki, but much of the film prior to this
is tedious and uninteresting. From the opening shot, the elephant of incest in
the room is hinted at, but we have to wait until the final minutes to deal with
it. The filmmaker's synopsis implies that both lesbian and incestuous relationships
may seem sick, but it's all about love - and love hurts. Should we be bothered
that he puts both on the same level? Regardless, despite its initial promise,
the film misfires to the point where I was checking my watch to determine when
it might be time to escape the theater. |
