Can't get enough of Mia Kirshner
("The L Word," Exotica, Love
& Human Remains and Not Another
Teen Movie)? Then get ready for New Best Friend, where she plays
bisexual as well.
The film opens with Kirshner's character Alicia in the
hospital from a drug overdose, and local Sheriff Bonner (Taye Diggs) investigates
the situation at Colby University, the North Carolina school where Alicia is a
student. Under suspicion are friends Hadley (Meredith Monroe), Sidney (Dominique
Swain) and Julianne (Rachel True, The Craft,
Nowhere, Half Baked, Embrace of
the Vampire). In between interviews, the story is shown in flashback.
Alicia and Hadley are paired in a class project, Alicia the scholarship student
with a single mom and Hadley the classic rich bitch. They become friends, and
Alicia begins changing to hang out with the cool chicks, partying, drinking and
taking drugs. Alicia and Sidney sleep together. Sidney is also sleeping with Julianne,
and they all seem to be having sex with one another's boyfriends. As good
girl/bad girl, rich girl/poor girl movies go, this one is a step above most, and
the cause of the overdose and the real Alicia unfold only at the very end. Fine
acting, except for the problem of a miscast Taye Diggs as sheriff. |
