In the summer of 2007, LOGO
premiered a gay and lesbian sitcom that became a huge hit. The stop motion animated
world of Rick and Steve and their friends is just plain funny, with some frank
humor that they probably couldn't get away with using real actors. The show
focuses on three couples. Rick's (Will Matthews) best friend is Kirsten (Emily
Brooke Hands, Lez Be Friends, Different), but her butch wife Dana
(Taylor M. Dooley) hates Steve (Peter Paige, "Queer as Folk"), and the
feeling is mutual. When Rick agrees to become a sperm donor so Kirsten can have
a baby, the sperm accidentally spills on Dana. She becomes pregnant, and the four
must somehow work together to prepare for parenthood while the barbs fly. Steve's
best friend is Chuck (Alan Cumming, Gray Matters,
Bam Bam and Celeste, "The L Word"), HIV+ and in a wheelchair.
His boyfriend is 19 year old Evan (Wilson Cruz, Bam Bam and Celeste, "My
So-Called Life," "Noah's Arc"), a party boy who is much younger.
They are all friends with Condi Ling (Margaret Cho), an "alternative lifestyle
companion" as she calls herself (otherwise known as a fag hag). The
plastic dolls are amazing in their representation of gay and lesbian stereotypical
appearances, like the mullet on Dana and the short cropped hair on other lesbian
characters. Steve's six pack abs, goatee and spiked hair are just perfect! |
