The Showtime series "Masters
of Horror" features hour long productions from well known horror film directors,
and each episode was released on dvd as a standalone film. Lucky McKee's (May)
contribution is "Sick Girl," with a lesbian relationship central to
the story. Nerdy entomologist Ida (Angela Bettis, May,
Girl Interrupted) likes bugs, but this creates a problem in her love life
when women come over and freak out when they see all of the unusual pets. Her
coworker tells her that she'll have to make a choice between babes and bugs. But
Ida is in luck when she meets Misty (Seduction Cinema star Misty Mundae), the
daughter of one of her favorite professors. Misty isn't bothered by "bugville,"
and the two end up making love on the couch on their first date. Soon the lovebirds
move in together, seemingly a perfect match. There is a problem though.
A very large, aggressive insect somehow escaped from its container in the apartment,
and now Misty is beginning to act very strange. Ida rushes home when she finds
out that the bug is a parasite that implants its eggs in mammalian hosts. It's
too late, but luckily Ida doesn't mind a buggy girlfriend. Bettis is great
as Ida, struggling with her social skills, and the film is actually quite funny,
never taking itself too seriously. |
