Based on Frank Miller's pulp
comic books, Sin City brings together three loosely related stories, all
with brutal violence, shot in black and white except for occasional bright colors
in comic book style. It's gritty, pulpy film noir and not for everyone, but it's
incredibly unique, with all-digital backgrounds. The lesbian related story
involves Marv (Mickey Rourke), a thug seeking vengeance for the death of a prostitute.
For help, he arrives at the home of his parole officer Lucille (Carla Gugino,
Jaded, She Creature), who sleeps
in the nude. Her girlfriend is a psychiatrist, and Lucille gives Marv prescription
drugs from their medicine cabinet. When Lucille is kidnapped, we learn
that it's somehow connected to the same prostitute, since the killer (Elijah Wood,
Lord of the Rings, Internal Affairs) saw her checking the woman
out at a bar. This is the bar where we also get to see Jessica Alba (Dark Angel)
do a pole dance. Most of this segment involves Marv's quest to torture and kill
the hooker's murderers. Other stories star Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Benicio
Del Toro, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy and many others. Warrior prostitutes
and Miho the ninja hooker (Devon Aoki, D.E.B.S.)
add interesting elements, but the overriding theme is kill or be killed throughout
the film. It's full of over the top, graphic violence, and Lucille's screen time
if very small. |
