For many lgbt people, the
bars have historically been the only place for many to come and be themselves
and feel a sense of community and family. In small town Bible Belt America, they
can be even more important to escape from the realities of closeted lives and
oppression. This documentary looks at two gay bars in rural Mississippi,
welcoming to everyone in the queer community and both a real oasis in economically
depressed areas with decidedly conservative cultures. Rumors
is owned by Rick, a man who isn't out to his family, and Crossroads is a much
wilder, anything goes bar that is closed down for violations. During the
filming, Lori purchases Crossroads and brings it back to life as Different
Seasons with the help of her partner Ruby. For Lori, it isn't really about
the money. It's about creating an environment where everyone can just be at ease.
The bar happens to be located in Meridian, Mississippi, the birthplace of Fred
Phelps, and we are treated to an interview with the anti-gay hatemonger who pickets
the funeral of Scotty Weaver, beaten to death for being gay. It's a slice
of life film in which we see lgbt folks who have chosen to or must stay in these
small towns, rather than dashing for the more accepting cities. Produced by Kevin
Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) and nominated
for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. |
