Episode 1, scene 1 - two
high school girls are on a carnival ride. They look into each other's eyes and
kiss. Not just a peck, but a kiss full of passion. Cut to one of the girls in
bed by herself ... masturbating with an electric toothbrush and fantasizing about
her new best friend. So begins "Sugar Rush," a 2005 UK series. The
focus for the show is Kim's (Olivia Hallinan) obsession with her friend Sugar
(Lenora Crichlow) and her love, lust and adolescent confusion. As she describes
herself, "I'm a fifteen year old queer virgin obsessed with my best friend
and her magnificent tits, and if I don't shag her soon, I'll explode." Set
in Brighton, England, the cast also includes her gay neighbors and their teenage
son, who has a crush on Kim. Kim's mother Stella (Sara Stewart) is having an affair
behind her husband's (Richard Lumsden) back, causing even more angst for their
daughter. The series does a very good job of conveying Kim's state of teenage
lust, with her share of heartache and joy. It's a great show, wonderfully acted
and a lot of fun. The season will keep you wondering. Will Sugar ever return Kim's
feelings or at least have sex with her? Or will Kim finally turn elsewhere for
love? Based on the semi-autobiographical
novel by Julie Birchill. |
