This complex murder mystery
was nominated for a Cannes Film Festival award, yet it includes a few somewhat
trashy sex scenes that win it a summary on this site. Lanny Morris (Kevin
Bacon, Wild Things) and Vince Collins (Colin
Firth, Bridget Jones: The Edge
of Reason, Shakespeare in Love)
are a comedy duo on top of the world in the 1950s. Although they have alibis,
a young woman mysteriously turns up dead in their hotel suite, and the two break
up their successful team without a word to the press about what really happened. In
1972, enter Karen O'Connor (Alison Lohman), a journalist who lands a book deal
to tell the real story of the incident and the men who were once such close friends.
What she finds is that behind closed doors, they lived the high life of booze,
pills and women. In flashback, we see Lanny enjoying the threesome company of
two hookers. Ferreting out the truth is no easy task, and what Karen didn't
count on was being manipulated by Vince. One night at his home, she finds herself
making love with another woman while he secretly takes photos. Vince plans on
this as his insurance policy so that no one finds out that he might swing both
ways himself. Karen does eventually figure out the story of the murdered
woman, and the end will surprise you. |
